VOLUNTEER
Help Us Welcome Newcomer Refugee Children & Youth to Canada!
BC Newcomer Camp - Welcome to Canada After-School Program:
Are you interested in teaching English to newcomer refugee children and youth? We have the perfect opportunity for you!
We are launching our new pilot program, the Welcome to Canada after-school program, and are recruiting teachers to facilitate online English classes for refugee children and youth ages 6-16 years old. Classes will be hosted twice per week using Zoom and each session will be 1.5 hours from 4:00 - 5:30 PM. Classes will be broken down by English language ability (basic or immediate levels), age, and first language.
Background
In the spring of 2020, BC Newcomer Camp's leadership team realized that hosting in-person summer camps would not be feasible due to COVID-19. Working with our partners in B.C.'s settlement and immigration sector, we discovered that recently immigrated refugee families have only one technological device per household (usually just a cell phone). With settlement organizations and services like public libraries working at a reduced capacity, this means that the pandemic has made it more challenging than ever for these families to tackle obstacles like finding permanent housing, employment, etc.
To address this, we held our 2020 Tech Drive to collect lightly used laptops/tablets and gave devices to 40 families. We then ran "online summer camps" to provide remote English lessons to 60 children while also giving the families a tool to access key resources.
We received overwhelming positive feedback from our partners in the settlement sector and from the families themselves. Motivated by this encouragement, we are expanding the program across the province and to a year-round schedule. Whenever a refugee family arrives in British Columbia, BC Newcomer Camp gives them a laptop and their children are enrolled into after-school online English lessons.
We're calling it our Welcome to Canada program and hope you can be a part of it.
